Choosing a Fire Hose Fitting

Update:02-02-2023
The main purpose of a fire hose fitting is to make a connection between a hose and another piece of equipment, such as a pump or hydrant. It is also used to connect pipes and other incompatible hoses together. Fire hose fittings come in many different types and sizes. They are available in a variety of styles, such as swivel, camlock, and quarter turn. In addition, they can be made of brass, aluminum, or steel.
When choosing a hose coupling, you will need to consider the size, style, and thread type. There are a number of different threads for fire hose fittings, and each has different spacing and diameter. Mismatched thread types can cause problems, such as leaking or bursting, and pose a safety risk to firefighters and their victims.
The thread style is a primary consideration when buying a hose coupling. There are several options to choose from, including NST, NH, and BAT. While these threads are the most commonly used, you can find fittings with other threads. You will need to check with your local fire department to determine which type is best for your needs.
There are also adapters, which are designed to change the thread pattern. These are typically made from brass or aluminum and are often anti-corrosive. Adapters are used in many ways, such as changing the thread pattern and making a permanent connection. A common use is to connect a 1-1/2" hose to a hydrant. Some adapters also include swivels in the hose lay line to connect the hose to a pump or hydrant.
If you're not sure what type of thread you need, you can count the threads per inch. You can also look for a stamp that states "Thread Standard Initials" or a similar statement. This indicates that the coupling is manufactured to a particular thread standard. For example, a female coupling with a "NST" stamped on it is designed to fit on a hose with a National Standard Thread.
Another common thread is the National Hose thread, which is often used in the U.S. and Australia. To connect with a fitting that uses the NH thread, the male side of the coupling will need to have a NH / NST thread on it. However, some NPT-threaded fittings can temporarily connect with NPSH-threaded fittings. Because of the difference in thread style, this can be tricky to identify.
Whether you're looking for an SS coupling, a swivel, or a hydrant adapter, knowing the differences can help you select the best fitting for your application. Also, make sure that your hose isn't stored in the wrong way. Stored in the wrong direction, a hose can become mismatched, causing it to burst under pressure.
Using a BS336 instantaneous fire hose coupling is a common choice for UK, Irish, and Canadian fire brigades. Instantaneous fittings are available in gunmetal or aluminum, and are used as a standard low-pressure fire fitting. They are also available in 4" or 5-1/2" sizes.
